Recovering Data From Hard Drives With Bad Sectors

without comments

Pulling my hair out! Argh! This time it wasn’t even my fault! I didn’t drop my hard drive, my boyfriend didn’t spill wine on it and my father didn’t manage to sit on it…

No this time my latest hard disk nightmare was caused by my hard drive having bad sectors. What’s a bad sector you ask? – ok, briefly a hard drive is divided up into sectors that have data written to them. There are millions of sectors on your average hard drive and sometimes these sectors go bad. When they do, the data held on those sectors can no longer be accessed. All hard drives have bad sectors, but clever software on them means that when bad sectors are detected they are swapped out and replaced by good ones. Clever eh? Well, yes except in my case it didn’t happen and my hard drive started slowing down before my data disappeared. There’s a good explanation of what bad sectors on a hard drive are here. I’m currently rewriting my article… and saving it to a different hard drive.

Technology… Don’ t you just love it!
